Sambandet mellan människohandel och prostitution

Ett superspännande seminarium på kommande:

SEMINAR II: HELSINKI 1st of DECEMBER
2006-11-02

“Demand – the link between trafficking and prostitution”

When discussing prostitution it is often considered as a profession, or it is studied from the women’s point of view. More often there is a lively discussion about the prostitutes: are they victims or are they strong individuals making their own choices? Meanwhile the discussion about how to prevent trafficking in human beings for sexual purposes, which constitutes around 90 % of all human trafficking, has being conducted mostly as a matter of policing and justice. In the European Union today prostitution is being considered as a Member State issue while trafficking is an European level issue.

However, there is a link. The link is the market for sexual services – the buyers. As both prostitution and trafficking are about business and making money the market aspect and the demand for the services becomes a link between them. We have invited the key researchers as professors Sheila Jeffreys (Australia, Melbourne) and Liz Kelly (London, UK) to discuss and highlight scientifically these important issues.

Sincerely, Maria Carlshamre, MEP, Alde
